Helping Your Overweight Pet
Dog parks and wellness centers have opened their doors to pet owners whose dogs are beyond "pleasingly plump". Services of weight reduction and exercise sessions are included to help solve the "fat-pet" syndrome.
Too much coddling and pampering of pet dogs often result to obesity and a wind-fall of diseases connected to improper weight. Pet owners have the tendency to spoil their pet dog by giving too many treats, sneaking table scraps for their pooch aside from its regular dog food. People over eat to get very fat, while pet dogs get over fed to be overly over weight. The limits on a dog's diet are set by the owner. Impulsive feeding of the pet is seen in dog owners who are into the idea that a fat dog means a happy and loved dog.
Over weight dogs have their average breed life span cut down to half because of it being at risk for major health problems. A trip to the veterinarian may be too late for fat-pet owners to reverse the effects in their pet's health.
Evaluation of a dog's body weight is not done by a chart. There is a 9 point system that guides veterinarians to pronounce a dog emancipated, just right or too fat. Comparison of dog body condition and weight is pointless especially when comparing two different dog breeds. Pronouncement of rib cage or how lost it is in folds of skin are guidelines of the point system. Contours of the body and a dogs weight according to breed are references to mark an ideal weight.
A score of 1 means the dog is too skinny; ribs being bony to the touch and with pronounced sticking out of rib cage and waist from view at top and side. A score of 3 means your dog is thin; ribs not that bony but not much muscles felt on ribs and waist and rib cage slightly pronounced, and a bony tail base. A score of 5 is the right weight; contours of the body defined with just the right amount of fat and muscles along the rib cage and a smooth bulge in the are nears the base of the tail. A whopping 9 score means it is obese; characterized by no contour at all from top and side view and bones (rib cage and base of tail) hidden deep in folds of fat and skin. The scores 2 & 4 mark border lines either slightly thin or almost too thin.
An over weight dog is easily exhausted and in some cases too lazy to carry his body around. If your pet dog's tummy is just inches from the ground and it does not appear the way its breed should consult your veterinarian. Pronouncement of its body condition will enlighten pet owners in true and proper diet for their pet. Consulting veterinarians helps by getting professional help, they can prescribe treatment through diet and exercise. A prayer of hope goes out to all pet owners who just can't get enough of their fat-pet, may you seek help for your pooch before it's too late.
